The Structural Integrity of the Honda Element

They are kinda ugly - I won't argue with that ... but just look at this picture. And, YES, that is a chicken next to the place where the right rear bumper used to be.

On New Year's Day at about 3:00 in the afternoon, my husband answered the phone and this is the part of the conversation I heard: "What happened? ... Are you okay? ... Where are you? ... Oh, my gosh! ... Are you sure you're okay?" You get the general idea. Seems our son Michael and his friend Ig were driving home from Tri-Cities to Yakima (about a 90 mile trip) along I-82 near Grandview. Ig was driving his dad's Element. As they started up an over-pass, they pulled into the left-hand lane to pass a semi. Well, the semi decided to change lanes into them and ran them off the road! After much slamming on of brakes, screeching of tires, and flapping of guardian angel wings, the Element spun back in front of the semi (who had finally realized they were there and began to slow down!), through the guard-rail, into the air, and finally onto the ground and into a roll. The vehicle rolled 5 - 7 times (depending on the witness you talk to) before coming to an almost upright stop next to the side of an elevated railroad track.

The miracle? Both young men climbed out of this mess with only minor cuts and scrapes, bumps and bruises! Did I mention, both boys WERE wearing seat belts.

Needless to say, the Dwyer and the Foley families are counting their blessings over and over again in the early days of this new year. Please join us in thanksgiving for the safety of our sons. Other families faced a far different outcome that day. There were 8 accidents on that stetch of highway on New Year's Day - and two fatalities. Please remember those families in your prayers.

"For to his angels he has given command about you, that they guard you in all your ways. Upon their hands, they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone." Psalm 91:11-12
