"A Good Dog"
The Dwyers said good-bye to Molly - their faithful companion of almost 15 years - on Friday, February 16th. She was a good dog.Molly joined our family in early June of 1992 at the tender age of 2 1/2 months. Our kids were then 5 & 7 and I'm pretty sure Molly thought of them as "the other puppies" in her new family. One of the many good things about Molly was that she had more energy than Michael and Megan had ... in other words, she could out-run, out-jump, out-chase, and out-fetch them from the very beginning. Everyone slept well after playing all day with Molly. She was a good dog.
Any of you who have raised children past the age of 7 know that life starts to get more difficult for them as they grow older. As our kids grew up, Molly provided the "shoulder" for many a good cry that Mom and Dad knew nothing about. She was privvy to more bad days and heartbreaks than we will every know. She was the keeper of childhood secrets and dreams. She was a good dog.
Any of you who have raised children through the teenage years know that life starts to get more difficult for parents as our kids grow older. There were many times Molly dried my tears and listened to my frustrations and doubts with undying devotion. She was a good dog.
Molly's impact on our lives will never be forgotten, for she was such a constant part of our children's growing up. The kids are no longer "puppies" - they are 20 and 22 - and Molly's death was like closing the book on Michael and Megan's childhood. And it is okay that a few tears were shed, for she was a good dog.
And I know dogs don't have souls - they aren't created in the Image and Likeness of God ... but you can't deny they are a special part of His creation. So in light of that, I like to think there is a place where the sun always shines, where someone is always ready to throw a tennis ball, and where every meal is table scraps. Because Molly deserves that ... after all, she was a good dog.
