Some FAQ...

How old do I have to be to be on a Reach team?

You must between the ages of 18 and 30.

Do I have to be Catholic to be on a Reach Team?

Yes. We are a ministry of the Catholic Diocese of Yakima and share our experience of the Sacraments and our relationship with Christ on retreat.

How long is the Reach Year?

Approximately 10 months. The time commitment is from the end of August until the end of June.

Do team members get time off?

There is a two week vacation for Christmas and other time off can be requested by team members throughout the year.

What are the requirements to be on a Reach team?

All team members must make a singles commitment which means they are not to be in a romantic relationship or pursue romantic relationships throughout the Reach year. Team members must also refrain from alcohol use and must undergo a criminal background check, as required by the Diocese of Yakima. Additionally, each team member must raise $4,250.00 in sponsorship to help cover the costs of the ministry. Team members receive a stipend of $150.00 a month for personal living expenses.

Why do we have to raise sponsorship?

Reach is a non-profit ministry. Retreat fees make up only 25% of our budget. The remaining 75% comes from private donations and team sponsorship. We simply need that income to keep teams on the road for a year. Sponsoring a team member provides a wonderful opportunity for individuals from your own community to be involved in youth retreat ministry.

How do I raise the money?

Most team members raise sponsorship through their family, friends and parish. Groups like the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Daughters and your own youth group are often willing to help. If you are invited to training, Reach will send you sample letters and ideas for how to raise the sponsorship.

I have college scholarships. Can I wait a year to use them if I want to do Reach now?

Often scholarships can be held for a year while you serve as a volunteer with a legitimate non-profit, charitable organization (and Reach is one!) The scholarship-granting organization may require specific details about Reach, which we are happy to provide. You would need to contact the granting organization to see what their policies are.

What about student loans? Can they be deferred?

Our experience has been, yes, most student loans can be deferred. Again, Reach is happy to provide a letter detailing specific information about this ministry to your lender upon request. However, deferral of student loans is at the discretion of the lender – be sure to check with them.

Should I postpone or take a year off of college to do REACH?

Only you know if God is calling you to team right now or asking you to keep it in mind for the future. Many team members have come on team right out of high school, some take a year off in the middle of college and some wait until they graduate from college to do a year on Reach. Everyone is different and that's all part of your discernment process.

Should I get an application even if I’m not totally sure REACH is what I’m to do??

Yes! Filling out and sending in the application is all part of the discernment process.

Is there an interview? What is it like?

Once we have reviewed your application, you may be invited to an Interview Weekend. The weekend is designed to be fun and informative. It consists of group activities and discussions, personal and corporate times of prayer, and, of course, the interview. You'll have the opportunity to meet the Leadership Team and give us a chance to meet and learn about you. It is a great opportunity to seek the Lord and what He has for you.
